“The challenges are real, but so is the ambition” – Sophie shares honest reflections on pressure, progress and agency life

We talk a lot about engagement. Not just how brands connect with audiences but how people connect with one another too.

Which is probably why Sophie, our Content & Communications Manager, found herself contributing to one of the industry’s most honest conversations right now as part of micebook’s latest Next Gen Edit

The article explored the realities many emerging professionals are navigating across the events industry – from burnout and resourcing pressures to leadership, confidence, and career progression in a world that rarely seems to slow down.

And for Sophie, one thing became clear very quickly: “The challenges are real, but so is the ambition. There is something reassuring about being in a room where people are openly figuring it out, rather than pretending they already have all the answers.”

The pressure behind the pace

One of the biggest themes Sophie reflected on was the growing pressure many teams are facing – tighter timelines, leaner teams and client expectations to deliver faster, better and somehow calmer. All at the same time.

Or in agency language: “Can we just make a few tweaks?” at 5:26pm on a Friday.

As Sophie shared: “Three themes surfaced almost immediately: resourcing pressures, rising client expectations around speed, and the ongoing challenge of maintaining some form of work-life balance as an aspiring leader in an industry that rarely switches off at 5.30pm”

It’s a reality many event professionals will recognise instantly. The pace of the industry has always been part of the appeal – the adrenaline, creativity and unpredictability. There’s also a growing shift happening around what success actually looks like.

Honest conversations > polished answers

One of Sophie’s biggest takeaways from the session was the value of openness.

No polished soundbites. No pretending to have everything under control. No LinkedIn version of reality where everyone is “thriving”. Just honest conversations.

And unsurprisingly, that honesty resonated throughout the room, particularly around the idea of career growth rarely comes from waiting until you feel completely ready. As Sophie puts it: “Nobody progresses without taking risks”.

Simple and slightly terrifying – but true!

Because whether it’s speaking up in meetings, stepping into leadership opportunities or backing yourself before you feel 100%, growth rarely arrives with perfect timing and a neatly colour-coded plan.

Why this matters to us

We believe the best agencies are built around people who feel supported, empowered and able to grow – not just professionally, but personally too.

Which is why conversations like this matter.

Sophie’s contribution to The Next Gen Edit reflects something we’re seeing more across the industry: a move towards more openness around wellbeing, leadership and the realities behind agency life.

Because while the events industry is brilliant at creating unforgettable experiences, it’s equally important that we create environments where the people behind those experiences are able to thrive too.
