HEADINGLEY GC JUNIORS MAKE TOP TEN IN NATIONAL FINALS

AUGUST 13, THU

Headingley Golf Club's Juniors have just returned from the EGU National Junior Club Championships with a fantastic ninth placed finish overall.

The team had previously swept all before them, both the Leeds and District and the Yorkshire qualifiers, to have the honour of representing Yorkshire at the 32-team event, which was held over two days at Burghley Park Golf Club in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

The team consisted of Headingley GC's Junior captain Kieran Dodd, as well as Tom Baird, Fraser Shiels and Sophie Olley as the non-playing reserve.

Michael Gwilliam, a member of Headingley Golf Club and director of the junior section sponsors, XSEM, said: "The team did terrifically well over the two days. Their skill on the course was matched with their appearance and demeanour off it. They were a credit to our club and to the county of Yorkshire.

Just to have reached the national finals was an incredible achievement in itself, so to have finished inside the top ten tops it all off."

Prior to the national finals, the juniors from Headingly beat off the challenge of almost 200 other golf club teams from across Yorkshire, first coming through the Leeds and District heat and then winning the County qualifiers too.

After the first day of competition in Lincolnshire, the team were lying in 12th spot having posted 70 points for the best two scores from the team, seven handicapper Tom and nine handicapper Fraser both having returned with 35 points over 18 holes.

The next day, captain Kieran enjoyed a much better day, returning with 34 points which included a fantastic birdie at the tough 14th. Tom Baird's tournament got better and better, posting a stunning gross 76 to return 37 points. The total was enough to see the team comfortably into the top ten finishers for the tournament.

Roland Baird, who oversees junior golf development at Headingley GC, added: "They've done so well and their performance shows the importance everyone at the club places on developing the fantastic talent we have here among the junior ranks. Like the senior ranks, membership is tremendously healthy and, with the course also in great shape at the moment, there is a real feel-good factor at Headingley."

· The club would like to give special thanks to the following people for making the trip to the finals such a memorable one: Brent Mason and the Headingley GC committee for its financial and moral support , Mike Snee for the new team bags and his support at the event, Jim Newton, Alan Barraclough and John Macmillan for their support at the event. Michael Gwilliam and XSEM for their sponsorship of the Juniors and support at the event, Nick Taylor for sponsorship of the team bags and finally Derek Shiels and Steve Olley for their support at the event
